Press Release 21 May 2008
EQUAL TREATMENT FOR AGENCY WORKERS
Labour MP David Hamilton has welcomed the Government's announcement of equal treatment for agency workers.
The Government has announced that once agency workers have been employed for 12 weeks they will be entitled to the same pay and conditions as permanent members of staff. Currently many agency workers receive less money and worse conditions than their colleagues performing the same job on a permanent contract.
He said; "I, and many of my colleagues on the Labour backbenches, have been campaigning for these changes for years. This is welcome news for the thousands of people who are currently discriminated against in the workplace. It will ensure that agency workers receive the pay, holidays, sick leave and other benefits that all workers deserve.
This is yet another example of how the Labour Government is working for the rights of ordinary workers across the UK. It builds on the foundations that 11 years of policies designed to ensure fairness and safety in the workplace have built."
