MIDLOTHIAN MP CALLS FOR RETIRING SOLDIERS TO BE GIVEN PRIORITY HOUSING
Midlothian MP David Hamilton has urged the Government to give members of the armed forces priority for social housing when they leave the forces. This is currently the policy in Midlothian, but David Hamilton wants the Government to instruct every council to do the same.
Speaking at Defence Questions in the House of Commons David Hamilton asked the Minister, ‘Surely the least that we can expect for our armed forces when they come back is a housing policy in every county, as there is in Midlothian, which gives them priority. It is accepted in the community, and it always has been, that they get priority.’
In response Defence Minister Derek Twigg MP said that David Hamilton had raised a ‘powerful and important point’ and said that the Government will look into it.
Speaking afterwards David Hamilton said, ‘I believe that the vast majority of people in this country value the work that our armed forces do, and would accept that they deserve priority when looking for social housing once they have completed their service’
