Discover the county

Midlothian is a constituency of hard-working people who welcome the opportunity to enjoy leisure pursuits and visit places of interest and there is no shortage of choice.

One of the star attractions -even more so at the moment thanks to a best-selling book - is Rosslyn Chapel which attracts more than 30,000 visitors a year and is famous worldwide for its carvings and frequent references to the Knights Templar and Freemasonry.

The Scottish Mining Museum represents the constituency’s more recent past. It is based at the Lady Victoria Colliery and is one of the finest examples in Europe of a Victorian colliery. It has recently undergone a £5 million restoration and now has a new visitors centre, restaurant and a shop as well as major new exhibitions and interactive displays.

Midlothian boasts Europe’s longest artificial ski slope that is open seven days a week and fifty weeks a year. It caters for skiers and boarders of all ages and standards.

There are swimming pools at Loanhead, Newbattle and Bonnyrigg and fitness centres at Loanhead, Queensway, Bonnyrigg, Mayfield, Danderhall and Dalkeith.

You can also enjoy horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, superb, scenic walking and golf at seven venues.
And there are many popular fishing locations such as the reservoirs at Glencorse, Edgelaw and Gladhouse. Pike, rainbow and brown trout fishing are available at Roseberry Reservoir near temple. The privately-run Loganlea in the Pentland Hills is stocked weekly with brown and rainbow trout. River fishing is available on the two main rivers - the North and South Esk.
